Today I decided to play around with the newest distribution of Ubuntu – Ubuntu 10.10 that was released a few weeks ago.
The easiest way to do this, of course, is to grab the latest iso image of Ubuntu 10.10 off the official Ubuntu website and to burn it onto a blank CD. Unfortunately, I don’t have any blank media at home, and even if I had, I would not waste a blank CD just for a try.
I decided to run Ubuntu on a virtual machine. I went to the VMware Player website and grabbed VMware 3.1.2.
I allocated 2048MB of ram to the Ubuntu 10.10 virtual machine, 2 cores for the processor and 10GB hard drive space. Then, the moment came to see the truth. I clicked on “Play this virtual machine” and waited impatiently for the loading to begin.
After a few minutes (not more than 5), Ubuntu 10.10 was loaded in its entire glory and I was already browsing around the Gnome desktop.
I liked how fast VMware Player really is. I didn’t notice significant lag when inputting commands from the keyboard or mouse and everything happened almost instantaneously.
I would recommend VMware Player 3.1.2 to everybody who wants to ry Ubuntu 10.10 or any other Linux or Windows operating system. You’ll really be amazed how good it is not to mess around with formatting your hard drive, moving and backing your data all day in order to try a new operating system or to reinstall your existing one because you have messed with it too much.
